Plato was discussing the idea of cups and that although there are several different versions of a cup, there is only one idea of a cup.
DIOGENES AND PLATO FULL
This one reeks of intellectual posturing and I don’t care for it but for the sake of giving you the full picture, I’ll go over it. The definition was later changed to “featherless biped with broad, flat nails” after they learned that Dio didn’t have any acrylics in his jar. Diogenes, less impressed with the comparison, took all the feathers off a chicken and stormed Plato’s school saying, “Behold! Here is Plato’s Man.” This annoyed the shit out of Plato and the local poultry community. Plato famously likened man to a “Featherless Biped” which his contemporaries described as the hottest mixtape of the summer. Diogenes liked to stir shit up and his favorite verbal punching bag was Plato, someone he saw as a hypocrite, corrupted by riches and ego. Plato once called him “a Socrates gone mad” which was probably because he fucking hated the guy and for good reason. Diogenesĭiogenes lived the entirety of his adult life as a beggar who for a long period lived in a large ceramic jar near the temple of Cybele, like some Corinthian Oscar the grouch. Anyone who has lived in the city long enough knows it is a perfectly acceptable reaction to avoid the bearded guy who spouts some crazy shit then takes a crazy shit. Shameful as it may be, it is hard to take a man seriously who recites a powerful speech directly before squatting and defecating in front of a once enamored audience. I think a lot of times when we read of people in history it is easy for us to not place ourselves in the position of a primary witness. We can admire his ability to speak honestly and his brilliant wit, but at the end of the day, you shouldn’t piss on someone because they called you a dog, even if it fits the description. With that being said, if someone is polite enough to invite you inside of their home, don’t spit in their face when they scold you for hacking phlegm onto the carpet.ĭiogenes was a dick, plain and simple. His ability to be unashamed and unwavering in his criticism of condescending intellectuals and egomaniacal leaders are things I wish I saw more of in myself.

There are several things about Diogenes that I personally very deeply respect and admire.
DIOGENES AND PLATO FREE
This is where I will stop going over his life chronologically and start pointing out the numerous highlights, though if you are interested in his life there are several incredible free sources online. This started a very long life of public urination, defecation, masturbation, condemnation and he also said a few things about philosophy between all his other hobbies.

She informed him to simply, “Deface the Currency.” to which Diogenes likely responded, “Tried that, what else?” Regardless, Diogenes decided to take her prophecy as meaning more that he should try to destroy the norms of society or its social currency. Self-sufficient as he claimed to be later, losing all his possessions and his ability to return to his hometown was likely a tough blow that ended in the death of his father, according to what little historical record there is.īeing young, fatherless, and probably more than a little broken at the time, Diogenes looked for direction in the Oracle of Delphi. Born in Sinope to a locally renowned banker, Diogenes first historically notable action was being exiled with his father for defacing the local currency.
DIOGENES AND PLATO HOW TO
If you ever need to know how to really get the people against you, look no further than the stoic thorn in Plato’s side, Diogenes. How To Create Enemies and Alienate People One person who Ancient Greece might prefer we forget is the brilliantly unhinged and uncomfortably honest cynic philosopher, Diogenes. When you look at people like Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Homer, Hippocrates, Archimedes, and Herodotus you start to see why we still remember their names a few thousand years later. There are few places in history with more emphasis on philosophy and intellectual discourse than that of ancient Greece. Also, don’t read this if you are eating or enjoying a beverage. This is almost as shameful for me as it is for the Illinois education system. Disclaimer: As with all my posts I wanna put upfront that I am an idiot who graduated with a GPA of.
